{"id":999,"date":"2026-09-23T12:11:25","date_gmt":"2026-09-23T10:11:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pdgconsultant.com\/?p=999"},"modified":"2026-09-23T12:11:27","modified_gmt":"2026-09-23T10:11:27","slug":"eu-hub-schema-2026-1-release-1-20","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pdgconsultant.com\/ca\/eu-hub-schema-2026-1-release-1-20\/","title":{"rendered":"EU Hub Release 1.20 and Schema 2026.1: What Pharmaceutical Companies Need to Prepare for 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The European Medicines Verification Organisation (EMVO) has published an important update for pharmaceutical companies and On-Boarding Partners (OBPs) connected to the European Medicines Verification System (EMVS).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EU Hub Release 1.20, currently planned for January 2027, will introduce the new <strong>Schema 2026.1<\/strong>, together with upcoming changes to EU Hub endpoints and certificates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Marketing Authorisation Holders (MAHs), serialization teams and IT providers, the key message is simple: <strong>2027 preparation should not be treated as a single \u201cEU Hub upgrade\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schema migration, endpoint migration, certificates, serialization platform compatibility and validation are separate \u2014 although interconnected \u2014 workstreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is changing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to EMVO, <strong>EU Hub Release 1.20 is currently planned for January 2027 and will introduce Schema 2026.1<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Importantly, existing Schema versions 2018.1 and 2021.1 will remain available during a defined transition period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMVO nevertheless recommends that OBPs start preparing for migration to <strong>Schema 2026.1<\/strong>, which is positioned as the recommended long-term version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This distinction is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The introduction of Schema 2026.1 in January 2027 does <strong>not automatically mean that every OBP must migrate its current Schema on the day Release 1.20 goes live<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies should therefore assess their current configuration and define a migration strategy based on their serialization platform, Gateway Provider, validation requirements and other ongoing projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>New endpoints and certificates are also coming<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schema migration is only one part of the change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMVO has also announced that <strong>new EU Hub endpoints and certificates are expected towards the end of 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OBPs migrating to Schema 2021.1 or Schema 2026.1 will need to complete the required endpoint migration <strong>before March 2027<\/strong>, when the current endpoints are planned to be discontinued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For pharmaceutical companies, this means that at least four areas should be assessed independently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Schema compatibility and migration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>EU Hub endpoint migration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certificate management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Serialization platform and Gateway compatibility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Treating all four activities as one generic \u201cEU Hub upgrade\u201d may create unnecessary complexity or, conversely, hide dependencies that could later affect connectivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What should pharmaceutical companies do now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies connected to the EU Hub should already be discussing the change with their serialization or Gateway Provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At minimum, the following questions should be answered:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which Schema version are we currently using?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which version does our provider recommend as the target for 2027?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which software release will support Schema 2026.1?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>When will the new EU Hub endpoints be available?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Will new certificates require configuration changes?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What validation or regression testing will be required?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is the proposed production cutover and rollback strategy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These questions become particularly important for companies that are simultaneously preparing other major serialization projects, such as the <strong>Italian FMD transition in 2027<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where possible, companies should avoid placing unrelated technical changes unnecessarily on the same critical path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EMVO is also focusing on alert prevention<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Release 1.20 is not the only relevant part of EMVO\u2019s latest update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMVO has also published practical recommendations intended to reduce recurring alerts across the EMVS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of these alerts are not caused by complex system failures. They originate from relatively simple data or process inconsistencies that can be prevented before packs enter the supply chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A2 alerts: Batch IDs are case-sensitive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Differences between uppercase and lowercase characters can result in an A2 alert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Batch IDs should therefore be transferred consistently between ERP, serialization systems, packaging lines and the EMVS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is particularly relevant where Batch IDs are manually entered or transformed between systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A3 alerts: ensure serialization data is uploaded before batch release<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An A3 alert may occur when a serial number being verified cannot be found in the EMVS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMVO recommends the following sequence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Generate serial numbers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apply the Unique Identifier to the pack.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete packaging and reconciliation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remove packs intended for QC testing, retention\/reference samples or destruction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upload the relevant Unique Identifier data to the EMVS.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Release the batch for sale or distribution.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not simply a good practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under Article 33 of Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2016\/161, Unique Identifier information must be uploaded to the repository system before the medicinal product is released for sale or distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For companies working with Contract Manufacturing Organisations (CMOs), this raises an important operational question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who confirms that the EMVS upload has been successfully completed before batch release?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer should be clearly defined within procedures and, where appropriate, Quality Agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Samples should also be considered carefully<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Retention, reference and quality-control samples that are identified during packaging should generally not be uploaded to the EMVS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If packs have already been uploaded and are later designated as samples, EMVO recommends decommissioning them using the appropriate <strong>SAMPLE<\/strong> status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a small operational detail that can prevent unnecessary inconsistencies later in the product lifecycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A7\/A24: check the pack status before performing another operation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EMVO also highlights alerts generated when an operation is attempted on a pack that has already been decommissioned or is in an incompatible state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before performing Product Status Updates, organisations should confirm the current pack status and, when investigating alerts, review the <strong>Pack Last Update Location (PLU)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful callbacks should also be confirmed before subsequent operations are performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>One pack before thousands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the simplest recommendations may also be one of the most effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before performing verification or decommissioning operations in bulk, EMVO recommends testing the intended operation on <strong>one pack first<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the expected result is returned, bulk processing can proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A configuration or status error affecting one pack is an incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same error applied to several thousand packs can become a major investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Alert prevention should become part of serialization governance<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After several years of FMD operation, pharmaceutical serialization in Europe is increasingly moving beyond basic connectivity and compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The question is no longer simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cCan we upload serialization data to the EU Hub?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies should increasingly be asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cAre our processes preventing avoidable alerts before the product reaches wholesalers, pharmacies or hospitals?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A practical EMVS alert-prevention assessment should therefore consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Batch ID consistency across systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>GTIN\/Product Code governance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Upload-before-release controls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>QC, retention and reference sample management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pack status checks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pack Last Update Location<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Callback handling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bulk operations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alert investigation and root-cause ownership<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For companies working with multiple CMOs, these controls should also be reflected in responsibilities and Quality Agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Preparing for 2027<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The upcoming EU Hub changes do not require pharmaceutical companies to panic, but they do require planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most effective approach is to separate the work into clear streams:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schema migration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Endpoint migration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Certificate management<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Serialization platform compatibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Validation and regression testing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>EMVS alert-prevention controls<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies that assess these areas early will have significantly more flexibility to coordinate their 2027 serialization roadmap without unnecessarily combining multiple regulatory and technical projects into the same implementation window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At PDG Consultant, we support pharmaceutical
